Introduction of Kampong Buangkok

Kampong Buangkok is the last surviving Kampong on mainland Singapore. Located at Buangkok, it is rather a place where people evoke nostalgia, reminded of their old days in Kampong. The old style of furnishing, the friendliness from neighbours, makes it a unique place in Singapore.

It is also known as 'Selak Kain' in Malay, which means 'hitching up one's sarong’. This is due to fact that Kampong Buangkok is a flood prone area, hence people will have to hitch up their sarong to walk through the waters.

History

Mr Sng Teo Kim bought this land from Mr Huang Yu tai. It was formally a swampy area with only 4 to 6 families. Mr Sng decided to rent some plot of the land out. The Malays rented the place and built houses on it. Ms Sng Mui Hong, being the youngest child, then inherited the land from her father.

The government also reacquired the part of the place, shrinking the size of the land from 21460m² to 12248.1m². The reacquired site us being used for redevelopment. Ms Sng was also compensated for it.

Ms Sng Mui Hong

Ms Sng is the landlady of Kampong Buangkok. She leads a very carefree life, taking care of many abandoned animals like dogs, parrots. Occasionally, she will go out of Kampong Buangkok to visit her sister in HDB flat. Her daily groceries are being taken care of by her niece.

She collects rents from the residents ranging from $6.50 - $30. The rent is calculated according to the house size. She does not take into account the size of the garden and hence the lower rent. Many residents are grateful to her for this.

Being a very friendly person, she helps out students in their projects, like us. She even brought us around to let familiarize ourselves with the surroundings and gave us valuable lessons on plant life which are not taught in our textbooks.
